BCCI Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to Emulate Sachin Tendulkar’s Long Career

On 3rd September, in Mumbai, the BCCI chief selectors and coaches had a highly confidential conference to decide the future of the Indian cricket team, for the upcoming ODI, including a sensitive topic about Rohit Sharma’s future standing for the 2027 World Cup.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selection officer Ajit Agarkar and Center of Excellence(CEO) head VVS Laxman were all part of the meeting, called by the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. ODI captain Shubman Gill was confirmed to attend the meeting in person whereas T20I captain Shreyas Iyer was expected to join virtually.

Although the list of subjects were not officially made public, multiple sources suggested that India’s recent white-ball losses, injury- related practices, and the 2027 World Cup strategies, along with Rohit Sharma’s future position in the team were discussed in the meeting.

Importance of this Meeting

The BCCI stated that ‘’this meeting had been a long-time due conference and came at a crucial time for team India,’’ right after an unsuccessful campaign in Ireland and England, where T20 team India lost all of the 6 matches that were played in 2 legs. The One Day International series against England also concluded in loss.

The discussions around supporting Vaibhabh Sooryavanshi, a 15 years old cricket prodigy, was also mentioned, where they supposedly outlined a well-planned strategy intended to help him develop a career similar to Sachin Tendulkar rather than him just fading out as a fleeting sensation.

Message from the Top

Following a high-level administrative conference on Thursday at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made clear the board's goals that Sooryavanshi should be encouraged for endurance rather than being used for quick publicity.

Saikia stated, "We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends." Therefore, we take Vaibhav extremely seriously.

His performance is being viewed closely and every performance is taking him closer to an effective international career. Thus the BCCI is monitoring his moves for a successful future in cricket.

It's important to emphasise "serving like Sachin." Only few players have ever matched Tendulkar's 24-year international career, which included 664 games and 34,357 runs in all categories.

By using that benchmark, the BCCI suggests that they recognise Sooryavanshi as an aspiring key component of Indian cricket for the following 10 years and longer, rather than merely a flashy young sensation.

The ‘One-Year Wonder’ Trap

Saikia was direct about the consequences of promoting a teenage boy at such a young age. He then added, "We are very cautious about every right step he should take forward so that it shouldn't be a one series or one year wonder."

This point of view is based on lessons learned from previous instances in which highly regarded young athletes were dragged into demanding responsibilities only to suffer with form, physical health, or emotional stress.

The board's current objective is to track Sooryavanshi's development gradually, making sure that every new assignment is suitable for his age, level of ability, and physical capability.

The national selection committee, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the BCCI's Center of Excellence (COE), led by former Indian player VVS Laxman, are working closely as part of this strategy.

With an emphasis on enhancing skills, intellectual readiness, and handling tasks, Laxman actively monitors the growth of a specific group of ten to fifteen young athletes, Sooryavanshi leading among them.

From IPL Superstars to Global Record-Holder

The journey to the top for Sooryavanshi has been nothing short of extraordinary. He became the tournament's highest run scorer and won multiple titles, such as the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Orange Cap, Super Striker, and Super Sixes, while completing an incredible IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals in which he recorded 776 total runs at a strike rate of 237.30, and also scored a century and five 50s.

Based on this performance, he was made part of India's T20I team for the July tour of England. At only 15 years of age, he broke Tendulkar's historic record as the youngest male cricketer to represent India.

The board and coaches decided to support his skills regardless of his first game series, where he scored 14, 13, and 15 runs respectively, which did not fulfill his own high expectations.

Although he compensated almost instantly for his poor performance in the following matches. He made 151 runs in 3 Twenty 20 Internationals on India's next tour of Zimbabwe, winning Player of the Series as India conquered 3-0 total.

During India A's Tri-Nation series victory in Sri Lanka, he also recorded the fastest-ever List A century, proving his skills in all kinds of formats and situations.

Domestic Supremacy and Emerging Leadership Positions

Sooryavanshi kept adding scores and took care of other commitments as well, soon after returning to India. He was promoted to vice-captain of East Zone in the opening-season's Duleep Trophy, and in the semi-final match against Central Zone, he became the youngest batsman in the tournament's history, managing to achieve 50 runs off just 42 balls.

With 92 off 81 balls at the end of that match, he was only 8 runs away from achieving another Tendulkar-owned record, and becoming the youngest first-class century. East Zone went to the final match with South Zone due to his quick 40 during the 2nd innings.

Despite this, Gautam Gambhir's consent is still pending for his participation in the Duleep Trophy final, as the head coach must evaluate his performance against the upcoming international games.

On September 6, East Zone is scheduled to play South Zone in Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. Senior players from South Zone, including KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, and Mohammed Siraj, will also compete in the match.

A Comprehensive Outlook for India's Future

The BCCI's strategy involves more than just one player, despite the fact that Sooryavanshi is among the most renowned names in men’s cricket. According to Saikia, a selected group of players are being monitored by the COE head which consists of about 10 to 15 young athletes in a similar age range.

"Our COE head, VVS Laxman, is tracking their performance and is very involved in their skills and general growth," Saikia remarked. This process has been made to guarantee that India does not depend on individual players but rather develop a consistent flow of emotional strength and can show competent performance against challenging countries.

A Cricket Prodigy with BCCI’s Safety Net

Until now, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's story sounds like a script of a movie meant to engage a country like India which is obsessed with cricket. A 15 year-old from Bihar who breaks Tendulkar's records, dominates in the IPL, and wins games for India only a few months after his professional debut.

However, the BCCI's message is very clear, the following decade is going to be the ultimate test, not just the next few seasons.

India's cricket authority is expecting that Sooryavanshi can transform from an exceptional young player to a trustworthy and legendary global cricketer who plays for the country for seasons to come with the necessary guidance and by dedicating himself to a long-term strategy similar to that of Sachin Tendulkar.

It's unclear if he can ever surpass a player like Tendulkar, but for now, the board's dedication, guidance, and processes are all being put together in order to give him the best opportunity to succeed.
